Why are you a Christian?

The other day on Insta, Bishop Barron offered a free pdf on how to talk to atheists about God. I expected the non-Christians to react how they did but I was surprised by one person’s response. This person asked, ‘Can’t you give it to me in one sentence so I can tell my girlfriend? She’s an atheist. We each try to convert the other…”. Wow. Ok, let’s start with, why are you dating an atheist?

My response to him was, ‘Perhaps the scripture about not being unequally yoked applies here? Perhaps it is better to break up with her than to risk your salvation?’ He kind of flipped out on me.

He called me absurd, and ‘reassured’ me his salvation was just fine, thank-you-very-much! But is it?

My response to him was that I was only as absurd as the scripture I quoted. Meaning, you’re not calling ME absurd but rather you are calling the scripture you profess to believe in absurd because it does not fit in with your personal doctrine.

He then accused me ob being ‘hardcore’ and recommended that I leave people alone to believe what they want to believe. What?

Let’s take a look at some things that I hope will reach whomever needs to hear them.

This man looked like he was in his late 60’s. Most likely he and his gf were engaging in sexual activity (if he had no health issues to impair his functionality- if you get my drift). Let’s assume that like most people his age, he and his gf decided to move in together to ‘save money’ and pool resources. People of all ages are doing this. If you are a Christian and you are doing this STOP! If you are a Christian dating a non-Christian, STOP!

2 Corinthians 6:14

14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?

KJV

What does it mean to be unevenly yoked? It means that one person is stronger than the other and will pull the weaker person around.

Unequally Yoked - YouTube
The donkey goes wherever the ox wants to go because the ox is stronger. UNEQUALLY YOKED… get it?

Here’s this man concerned his gf isn’t a Christian but is he? If you’re already living in sin you ARE equally yoked with the person in your life because you’re both going down the wrong road. So why worry if your gf or bf is a Christian if you’re not living a Christian life why worry about their salvation/sanctification when yours is also compromised?

To be clear, this post is not about you giving up your faith and sinking further into the mire of sin. It’s about giving up your sinful life and climbing higher toward imitating Christ. How do we as Christians imitate Christ?

Leviticus 19:2
“Speak to the whole congregation of Israel and tell them: Be holy because I, the LORD your God, am holy.

Deuteronomy 18:13
You must be blameless before the LORD your God.

2 Samuel 22:31
As for God, His way is perfect; the word of the LORD is flawless. He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him.

Matthew 5:47
And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even Gentiles do the same?

2 Corinthians 7:1
Therefore, beloved, since we have these promises, let us cleanse ourselves from everything that defiles body and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

Ephesians 5:1
Be imitators of God, therefore, as beloved children,

Philippians 3:12
Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.

One of the things this man said to me in IG comments was, ‘It’s best to leave people alone and let them believe what they want to believe because… this is how wars are started.’ No… no it is not.

Back to my original question… why are you a Christian?

Is it a box you checked on a form because you’re an American and Americans are Christians? Don’t read this post and think that maybe it’s time to give up being a Christian. Read this post and do better. It’s not as if the time between now and when Christ returns is expanding. It’s shrinking.

The judgement seat of Christ is for BELIEVERS. It’s not for the unbelievers.

See the book Christ is holding in this icon (pictured below)?

Pin on Jesus Christ

That is the Book of Life. You know the Book of Life? the Book your name is written in but also can be scratched out of?

“He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.”
Revelation 3:5, KJV

This verse from the book of Revelation tells us your name can go in AND it can be removed… blotted out. How we live after we are baptized can have a direct effect on our status in this book, in our eternity. Salvation is a process. We do not get baptized and then go back to sinning as if nothing special happened in our lives. Every time we sin we are casting those sins upon Christ on the cross again and again.

Yes, sanctification is a struggle, a process but we are commanded to be ‘over comers’ not undertakers. Over come sin, do not take it on and wear it like a badge of honor.

1 Corinthians 10:23 All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.

KJV

If you see any words you do not understand, look them up. You’re sitting in front of a search engine right now.

Again I ask; WHY ARE YOU A CHRISTIAN?

Figure it out before it’s too late. There is no such thing as fire insurance. I am closing this post by sharing with you a vision I had years ago. Almost 20 years ago.

I was driving down Woodman Ave toward the place my then fiance, now husband were attending worship services. The people who pastured the “place” did not live far from the building. I was going to discuss wedding stuff with the woman pastor. As I was driving I had this vision:

There was some sort of platform. a kind of stage. People in bright orange jump suits like prisoners wear were being beheaded by men in black (Christians being martyred/killed by Muslims I now know it to be. At that time I had no idea what was going on but with it being so prevalent now that part of the vision now makes sense.) Some of the people being murdered were not Christians. They had not lived a Christian life. They had never been baptized, they had never confessed a sin… nothing. God told me that there will be people who never accept Christ as their savior who will allow themselves to be, ‘martyred’ thinking it will save them, that it will grant them a last minute ‘pass’ into heaven. It will not. the people who volunteer to be martyred without accepting Christ as their savior or living the Christian struggle. They will be lost.

It’s not like the parable of the workers who came to the field at different time of day but were paid the same wage. That’s not the same thing. In that parable, the workers came. They came with purpose. The people in my vision were like workers who only showed up for pay day. They never checked in with the foreman (Jesus). They never signed up on the ‘payroll’ (their names never made it into the Book of Life.)

This is not to be confused with those who sincerely confess their sins and accept Jesus even at the very end right before the knife touches them. Jesus knows the difference even though I’m having a hard time explaining it. It’s a heart matter. There is a difference between confessing sins and accepting Christ as your Savior with a sincere and contrite heart or thinking you can use the name of Jesus as a password to get into the ‘clubhouse’ (heaven).

Movie recommendation; Six: the Mark Unleashed.

This scene is from that movie. I seriously almost soiled myself when I saw this scene. Exchange the jumpers from gray to bright orange, the guillotines into machetes and there’s the vision I had.

Why are you a Christian?

What ended up happening with that man on IG? I’m sad to say he projected what appeared to be decades of hurt and anger onto me, falsely accused me, then blocked me. So… you know… the usual.

Binging is gluttony

Have you heard about ‘Covid 15 or Covid 10’? It is not a new strain of the virus but a reference to the weight people are gaining during the pandemic. I for one have been eating like it is my job. My assignment, should I choose to accept it is to consume as many calories as possible everyday.

That is not really my assignment, but I have been living as if it were. It’s not just Covid stress. It’s the Covid stress compounded with normal life stresses, the general lawlessness in American right now (especially seen in how people drive AND how we are treating each other). It all adds up.

Normal stress reducing techniques are replaced by things we know are not good for us but we justify their necessity. When I confessed this to my priest, this is what he wrote back.

Thanks be to God, He is merciful!    Let us gain a “broken and contrite heart” from observing and confessing our passions.   We are weak indeed….  And the current cultural oppression of pandemic and politics seem to drive us all the more easily toward the passions for some degree of relief and escape, if not simply “excuse”.   In the “High Priestly Prayer” of our Lord in John 17 He prays:  “I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.”  It would sure be easier if we could be taken “out of the world”….   Keeping ourselves from “evil” is a lot more work!   Nonetheless, our Lord is with us and prays for us…. So that in Him “all things are possible”.   I expect that although we are not being removed from the world, nonetheless, “the world” needs to be removed from us… and that is surely what He means when he uses the word “evil”….   That we be kept from domination from the passions and reasonings within.  The post communion prayer unto the Theotokos specifically states “deliver me from the bondage of my own reasonings”.
God help us!   And God is helping us!   Glory to God for His immeasurable sustaining grace and mercy.

I hope this brings some measure of insight on how to better deal with ‘comfort sins’ or ‘comfort passions’. As Christians, we are called to remove the world from within ourselves.

Binging on food, drink, entertainment, etc. is all gluttony. How can we do better? More prayer. Prayer for ourselves our family our community.

It is being predicted that there will be riots after the election no matter who wins. Join me in praying against that.

There has been a radical display of hate the last few months. How about a radical display of love?

Where can you start? Example; one of my nieces was in a terrible car accident yesterday. Her car was T-boned by a driver running a stop sign. I have seen so many people running red lights and stop signs lately. STOP DOING THIS!! You have no right to do this. If you are running late that is your problem and you don’t endanger the lives of other people to make up the time you spent over-sleeping or doing whatever it was that prevented you from giving yourself enough time to safety travel to your destiny.

Let’s work on being humble, loving and considering others better than ourselves. This IS what Jesus did.

My focus this week is on NOT eating to excess (well, not JUST this week but now is a great time to start making changes).

Can you think of something that needs adjusting in your life that you can begin to change today?

THERE ARE 11 WEEKS AND ONE DAY LEFT IN 2020.
