Do you believe?

Christ, "Healer" – Damascene Gallery

There used to be a t.v. show a couple decades ago called, The Xfiles. On the wall in one of the agent’s offices was a poster that read: ‘I Want to Believe’ printed over the image of a space craft.

I think many modern Christians feel the same way about many of the unexplainable things they read, or encounter first hand, about God. So much of our daily lives today have been invaded and over run by science and technology. So much so that there are commercials geared toward parents to frighten them into getting their children into S.T.E.M. whether or not their child shows aptitude or interest in those topics. ‘Dear Parents, you can tell your daughter she is pretty AND hand her the power drill to build a rocket. These things are not mutually exclusive.’ However, as a woman with beauty and brains, yes, I said that about myself deal with it. It took more than a little bit of effort to find a man to date and eventually marry, who was not intimidated by my intellect. I even had a boyfriend once who kept correcting my use of ‘big words’ in an effort to ‘dumb them down’. Remember that old adage; ‘boys don’t make passes at girls who wear glasses!’? It was used profusely when I was growing up. Because having a man hit on you was supposed to be more important than feeding one’s mind?! My how times have changed but not entirely for the better.

These days, we see many Christians trying to qualify and quantify scripture through science. While God made all of the known sciences, and the unknown sciences, He exists outside of them all. We often hear how He exists outside of time, but in order to do what He has done, and continues to do, we must see that He does so because He operates outside of the constraints of known science.

As a Christian can you tap into some of this unexplainable wonder, or must you put God into a Petri dish in order to be able to worship Him? And what if you are able to place Him within your narrow confines of understanding? Then what? Would he still be worthy of your worship?

I bring this all up to you to introduce you to a new series I hope to bring to you about the supernatural things of the bible. We will be going places with which you might not be comfortable.

I will also be producing content for Youtube.

Why am I doing this? Why, ‘go there’? We have drifted too fat into Cain’s camp. What is Cain’s camp? Science and technology. There are many people out there in the world who are quietly, and not so quietly suffering because they do not fit into this high tech world. There are people out there who see dead people. Who hear things, see things, smell things that not everyone else does. Some of these people might think they have a mental illness. Some may actually have a mental illness or two but not everyone who has these gifts is mentally ill. Let me repeat that for whomever needs to hear it…

NOT EVERYONE WHO SEES OR HEARS THINGS NOT SEEN OR HEARD BY EVERYONE IS MENTALLY ILL! This means you.

I See Dead People' – How to Stop Your Employees from Leaving YOU! | Toolbox Hr

However, because such things feel safer to the Cain People if they can be tied up neatly with a bow, people who experience such things are labeled as being ill, odd, whatever, and then safely tucked away from everyone else. Whew, don’t we all feel better now that they are gone and we can go back to the mundane? Well, no… not all of us. There are some, like I and other people working to bring such things to light that are not ok with people being locked up simply because those who can’t understand the mystical let alone help people safely navigate the ‘spiritual ether’ would feel better with such things and people being out of sight out of mind.

If the bible says, ‘Jesus healed a blind man with spit and dirt’ then He healed a blind man with spit and dirt. Who are we, His followers. not to believe it?

Unfortunately, many churches do not teach anything about how to do these things, they have no explanation beyond demons or possession to explain the gifts given to someone who can hear and see things, predict future events (that’s called being a prophet), etc.

Some churches try by teaching their flock how to speak in tongues. Years and years go by and people are still speaking in tongues. Here is scripture on that matter:

Speaking in Tongues - 10 Things to Know From the Bible
Holy spirit descending on the people at Pentecost.

14 Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.

For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.

He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.

I would that ye all spake with tongues but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.

Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?

And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped?

For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?

So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.

10 There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification.

11 Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me.

12 Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.

13 Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret.

14 For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.

15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.

16 Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest?

17 For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified.

18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:

19 Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.

20 Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men.

21 In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord.

22 Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.

23 If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?

24 But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all:

25 And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth.

26 How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.

27 If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.

28 But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.

29 Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge.

30 If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace.

31 For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted.

32 And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.

33 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.

34 Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience as also saith the law.

35 And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.

36 What? came the word of God out from you? or came it unto you only?

37 If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.

38 But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant.

39 Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.

It’s a deal to read but I hope you did read it.It is heartbreaking to hear stories about people who are within the church and are not receiving help. Churches that focus only on speaking in tongue are doing a great disservice to their congregants who need more education and understanding pertaining to their gifts. Speaking in tongues is for the newbie Christian so that they might believe. Why are some congregations STILL doing it?

Church, we must stop catering to the new people exclusively. it’s like a school never advancing any student past first grade in an effort to not confuse the new students coming in at each start of the school year. Would you want your child to be 17, ready to graduate and yet she is still reading Dick and Jane because the teacher was afraid that giving your daughter a more advanced book to read would confuse or scare the First Years?! Of course not! Yet this is what is happening in churches all across America. We neglect Christianity 301 because it’s ‘scary’. No one wants to risk manifesting a demon (which is impossible to do while practicing the things of the bible by the way. Come on… think about it.), while trying to pray for a miracle.

11 Struggles Of Trying To Be A Less Awful Person | Schitts creek, Creek, Catherine o'hara

In my previous encounters with people trying to tap in to the supernatural things of the bible they were a bit contradictory to themselves. They wanted to be like other houses of prayer with 24hour praise, prayer and worship, but anytime you talked of seeing spirits, everything was a demon. No, everything unexplainable is not a demon. Most things do have an explanation but the explanation for them is not found in a high school science text book.

The bottom line for every gift we have been given is that it is to be used for the glory of God. If we keep in mind that our gifts are given to us from God and are to be used in service to God we should be ok. Ok as in as long as we do not become power hungry or seekers of fame and fortune, as long as we do not turn people away from God and toward other deities, if we do not deviate from the gospel nor take credit for our gifts as if they some how sprang up from inside of us without intervention from Holy Spirit… basically, if we remain humble our path with remain righteous. Not necessarily easy-peasy, but righteous and undefiled.

Thrift store confrontation

Photo by allison christine@happpyal from Unsplash

Yesterday, I did a bit of shopping with Mom. We went to the grocery store and then I walked her to her car and I went over to the thrift store. I need to add height to one of my counter tops but I cannot afford a full kitchen make over although one is desperately needed.

I looked through the available furniture, saw a couple of, ‘maybes’ and was just ready to head over to the book section when I was stopped by a woman sitting at a desk. We got to talking and turns out, she is a recent graduate of a local church college of a man who probably should never have started a ministry let-alone a college to teach and spread his heresies. yes… I said heresies.

Back in my house of prayer days, there was a scandal in a big ‘faith healing movement’ and ministry. Todd Bentley had an affair, divorced his wife and married the woman who helped him crater his marriage. He should have been immediately removed from ministry and banned from teaching but golly gee he brings in the money so all of that flood water under the bridge was forgotten and things were swept under the rug with pithy sayings such as, ‘We don’t know his heart. Only God knows his heart.’. Um… what? I’m pretty sure he revealed the contents of his heart when he 1. Cheated on his wife. 2. Divorced his wife. 3. Married the woman with whom he had his affair, 4. Kept teaching and preaching. The bible says men who pastor must be the husband of one wife. That does not mean one wife at a time. It means ONE wife EVER AND EVER AMEN.

Bentley should have stepped down from ministry forever and if his wife would not take him back and they divorced he should have stayed single.

What does, Bentley’s story have to do with what happened to me in the thrift store? The woman with whom I was conversing (it is conversing not conversating), kept going on about how wonder so-and-so, the ministry leader, was. How his books were so great, how he had such great information and insight about God, and Jesus, etc. Most of our conversation revolved aroudn the greatness of this man and very little actual conversation about Jesus. I am going to call this man, ‘John Doe’.

During the pandemic, John Doe and his ‘healing ministry’ are singularly responsible for a major outbreak in their city during the pandemic. They refused to wear masks, social distance, or cancel a ‘healing’ retreat. They cited; religious freedom, constitutional freedom, Holy spirit will protect us from anything and everything, etc. He is now being sued.

His attitude although fairly popular among the religious unhinged does not mirror the mind of Christ.

1 Corinthians 8

Concerning Food Sacrificed to Idols

8 Now about food sacrificed to idols: We know that “We all possess knowledge.” But knowledge puffs up while love builds up. Those who think they know something do not yet know as they ought to know. But whoever loves God is known by God.[a]

So then, about eating food sacrificed to idols: We know that “An idol is nothing at all in the world” and that “There is no God but one.” For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as indeed there are many “gods” and many “lords”), yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live.

But not everyone possesses this knowledge. Some people are still so accustomed to idols that when they eat sacrificial food they think of it as having been sacrificed to a god, and since their conscience is weak, it is defiled. But food does not bring us near to God; we are no worse if we do not eat, and no better if we do.

9 Be careful, however, that the exercise of your rights does not become a stumbling block to the weak. 10 For if someone with a weak conscience sees you, with all your knowledge, eating in an idol’s temple, won’t that person be emboldened to eat what is sacrificed to idols? 11 So this weak brother or sister, for whom Christ died, is destroyed by your knowledge. 12 When you sin against them in this way and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ. 13 Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother or sister to fall into sin, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause them to fall.

So many times during the pandemic I read, and heard, people ‘losing it’ because the precautions used to prevent the spread of the virus were violating their rights and they mocked those they considered to be in fear, or weak. This is NOT the mind of Christ. WE ARE SUPPOSED TO BE HUMBLE AND THEREFORE LOVING TOWARD THOSE WHO ARE WEAK, CARRYING THEM UNTIL THEY STRENGTHEN. John Doe’s arrogance and misinterpretation of scripture combined with his lack of humility caused others to become ill. His failure to adhere to state guidelines caused his ministry to become ‘super spreaders’ of the virus. There are more reasons than that as to why I greatly dislike his particular brand of ‘Christianity’ but I neither have the space or the desire to go into all of that right now.

So there I was at the thrift store being bombarded by this woman about how great ‘Super Spreader Ministry- John Doe’ was. she mentioned a church I used to attend and how they are partnered with SSMJD and his ministry, etc., etc. and I’m standing there trying not to vomit. I finally break away and head to the door but not before she and I ask each other if we have prayer needs. Her prayer request was so very telling. ‘I struggle from time to time with a little bit of depression.’ I don’t doubt it, I thought to myself. In the kind of ministry and ‘Christianity’ SSMJD and his ilk promote, you are not allowed to be weak or ill in anyway, shape or form. To be so is to declare you are not a ‘good enough’ Christian. They teach you are not filled with the Holy Spirit. You are defective in some way. Well yes, we all are which is why we need a Savior. They misinterpret the bible and great these ministries filled with false information and then declare that if you; fall ill, your kids act up, you have financial difficulty, you struggle in your marriage it is because you lack faith. Which means, SSMJD thinks that anyone who attend his ‘awesome’ healing ministry shindig and came down with the virus wasn’t filled up enough of the Holy Spirit to keep themselves from becoming ill… it’s THEIR fault they fell ill.

Someone truly filled with the Holy spirit who was seeking the mind of Christ and becoming Christ minded would never come to that conclusion. They would never say; “I will do what I want and if you don’t like it that’s your problem I will not be confined by your weaknesses.’. Well, la-dee-dah! Some days it is difficult to almost impossible to tell the Christians from the heathens.

James 5:14-16

King James Version

14 Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:15 And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.

16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

The Lord is full of compassion and mercy. … He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven.

We see in scripture that people do fall ill. They need prayer. In orthodoxy we are told that praying for the sick is good for us. It reminds us we too are frail and can fall at any time for any reason. It gives us an opportunity to humble ourselves and to pray for one another. We all need more humility. We kid ourselves if we deny the need for personal humility. This is one of the reasons why I left Protestantism but especially evangelical Protestantism; it is full of false hope. Hope in man not Christ. Hope in ourselves and yes in works. For a group of people who vilify the Orthodox chruch for doing works, Protestantism is full of messed up backwards works. If you tithe you are protected-we tithed and the devil had us for lunch. If you have enough faith… XYZ will never happen- we believed, we had faith, we prayed, we fasted, we tithed, we did all the ‘works’ and we still had calamity come to us.

What this sort of messed up Christianity does is it leaves people without answers, comfort hope, or anyone to ask for prayer because this sort of ‘Christianity’ is full of condemnation and judgement. No one this woman stopped me in the middle of a store. she needed prayer for her depression but who could she have gone to in her sphere of friends, family or ministry people? No one. If she does, she will be marked as being faithless. There is a misconception in Evangelical Protestantism that once you become ‘saved’ you should never need anything again. Your marriage is perfect, your children are perfect, your health, your wealth, etc. Evangelicalism is like a hyper type A personality with no boundaries on a massive sugar and caffeine high. It is aggressive and unmerciful.

Conversely, Orthodoxy recognizes the church is a hospital and the participants within its walls are weak and in need of excessive mercy and grace poured out from the BIG pitcher.

I need to wrap this up but the woman I encountered brought up something interesting I wish to discuss in the next blog post; having a personal relationship with Jesus. She had converted from Roman Catholicism to EPC (Evangelical Protestant Christianity). Oh they are seductive… those lies from the Enemy. Promises made that never quite come true… and of course it’s all YOUR fault and never the fault of the false teachings you encounter along the way. They use ‘faith’ as a scapegoat. ‘Oh, tithing did not bring you health, wealth, good kids, and a strong marriage? You must not have done it with enough faith.’. Mmm-hmm.

Be careful about following one man’s or one woman’s ministry. Be part of a church community. Find and read books from the ancient fathers. Break off the strong hold on your mind these false teachers, false prophets, and heretics have placed upon you, In Jesus name. have the right kind of breakthrough where you decide to chase after ancient wisdom and not these leis that are only about 60 years old.

There is nothing new under the sun.

Ecclesiastes 1:9

New King James Version

That which has been is what will be,
That which is done is what will be done,
And there is nothing new under the sun.
