There used to be a t.v. show a couple decades ago called, The Xfiles. On the wall in one of the agent’s offices was a poster that read: ‘I Want to Believe’ printed over the image of a space craft.
I think many modern Christians feel the same way about many of the unexplainable things they read, or encounter first hand, about God. So much of our daily lives today have been invaded and over run by science and technology. So much so that there are commercials geared toward parents to frighten them into getting their children into S.T.E.M. whether or not their child shows aptitude or interest in those topics. ‘Dear Parents, you can tell your daughter she is pretty AND hand her the power drill to build a rocket. These things are not mutually exclusive.’ However, as a woman with beauty and brains, yes, I said that about myself deal with it. It took more than a little bit of effort to find a man to date and eventually marry, who was not intimidated by my intellect. I even had a boyfriend once who kept correcting my use of ‘big words’ in an effort to ‘dumb them down’. Remember that old adage; ‘boys don’t make passes at girls who wear glasses!’? It was used profusely when I was growing up. Because having a man hit on you was supposed to be more important than feeding one’s mind?! My how times have changed but not entirely for the better.
These days, we see many Christians trying to qualify and quantify scripture through science. While God made all of the known sciences, and the unknown sciences, He exists outside of them all. We often hear how He exists outside of time, but in order to do what He has done, and continues to do, we must see that He does so because He operates outside of the constraints of known science.
As a Christian can you tap into some of this unexplainable wonder, or must you put God into a Petri dish in order to be able to worship Him? And what if you are able to place Him within your narrow confines of understanding? Then what? Would he still be worthy of your worship?
I bring this all up to you to introduce you to a new series I hope to bring to you about the supernatural things of the bible. We will be going places with which you might not be comfortable.
I will also be producing content for Youtube.
Why am I doing this? Why, ‘go there’? We have drifted too fat into Cain’s camp. What is Cain’s camp? Science and technology. There are many people out there in the world who are quietly, and not so quietly suffering because they do not fit into this high tech world. There are people out there who see dead people. Who hear things, see things, smell things that not everyone else does. Some of these people might think they have a mental illness. Some may actually have a mental illness or two but not everyone who has these gifts is mentally ill. Let me repeat that for whomever needs to hear it…
NOT EVERYONE WHO SEES OR HEARS THINGS NOT SEEN OR HEARD BY EVERYONE IS MENTALLY ILL! This means you.
However, because such things feel safer to the Cain People if they can be tied up neatly with a bow, people who experience such things are labeled as being ill, odd, whatever, and then safely tucked away from everyone else. Whew, don’t we all feel better now that they are gone and we can go back to the mundane? Well, no… not all of us. There are some, like I and other people working to bring such things to light that are not ok with people being locked up simply because those who can’t understand the mystical let alone help people safely navigate the ‘spiritual ether’ would feel better with such things and people being out of sight out of mind.
If the bible says, ‘Jesus healed a blind man with spit and dirt’ then He healed a blind man with spit and dirt. Who are we, His followers. not to believe it?
Unfortunately, many churches do not teach anything about how to do these things, they have no explanation beyond demons or possession to explain the gifts given to someone who can hear and see things, predict future events (that’s called being a prophet), etc.
Some churches try by teaching their flock how to speak in tongues. Years and years go by and people are still speaking in tongues. Here is scripture on that matter:
14 Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.
2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.
3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.
4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.
5 I would that ye all spake with tongues but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.
6 Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?
7 And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped?
8 For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?
9 So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.
10 There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification.
11 Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me.
12 Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.
13 Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret.
14 For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.
15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.
16 Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest?
17 For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified.
18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:
19 Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.
20 Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men.
21 In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord.
22 Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.
23 If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?
24 But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all:
25 And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth.
26 How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.
27 If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.
28 But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.
29 Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge.
30 If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace.
31 For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted.
32 And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.
33 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.
34 Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience as also saith the law.
35 And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.
36 What? came the word of God out from you? or came it unto you only?
37 If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.
38 But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant.
39 Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.
It’s a deal to read but I hope you did read it.It is heartbreaking to hear stories about people who are within the church and are not receiving help. Churches that focus only on speaking in tongue are doing a great disservice to their congregants who need more education and understanding pertaining to their gifts. Speaking in tongues is for the newbie Christian so that they might believe. Why are some congregations STILL doing it?
Church, we must stop catering to the new people exclusively. it’s like a school never advancing any student past first grade in an effort to not confuse the new students coming in at each start of the school year. Would you want your child to be 17, ready to graduate and yet she is still reading Dick and Jane because the teacher was afraid that giving your daughter a more advanced book to read would confuse or scare the First Years?! Of course not! Yet this is what is happening in churches all across America. We neglect Christianity 301 because it’s ‘scary’. No one wants to risk manifesting a demon (which is impossible to do while practicing the things of the bible by the way. Come on… think about it.), while trying to pray for a miracle.
In my previous encounters with people trying to tap in to the supernatural things of the bible they were a bit contradictory to themselves. They wanted to be like other houses of prayer with 24hour praise, prayer and worship, but anytime you talked of seeing spirits, everything was a demon. No, everything unexplainable is not a demon. Most things do have an explanation but the explanation for them is not found in a high school science text book.
The bottom line for every gift we have been given is that it is to be used for the glory of God. If we keep in mind that our gifts are given to us from God and are to be used in service to God we should be ok. Ok as in as long as we do not become power hungry or seekers of fame and fortune, as long as we do not turn people away from God and toward other deities, if we do not deviate from the gospel nor take credit for our gifts as if they some how sprang up from inside of us without intervention from Holy Spirit… basically, if we remain humble our path with remain righteous. Not necessarily easy-peasy, but righteous and undefiled.
