The other day on Insta, Bishop Barron offered a free pdf on how to talk to atheists about God. I expected the non-Christians to react how they did but I was surprised by one person’s response. This person asked, ‘Can’t you give it to me in one sentence so I can tell my girlfriend? She’s an atheist. We each try to convert the other…”. Wow. Ok, let’s start with, why are you dating an atheist?
My response to him was, ‘Perhaps the scripture about not being unequally yoked applies here? Perhaps it is better to break up with her than to risk your salvation?’ He kind of flipped out on me.
He called me absurd, and ‘reassured’ me his salvation was just fine, thank-you-very-much! But is it?
My response to him was that I was only as absurd as the scripture I quoted. Meaning, you’re not calling ME absurd but rather you are calling the scripture you profess to believe in absurd because it does not fit in with your personal doctrine.
He then accused me ob being ‘hardcore’ and recommended that I leave people alone to believe what they want to believe. What?
Let’s take a look at some things that I hope will reach whomever needs to hear them.
This man looked like he was in his late 60’s. Most likely he and his gf were engaging in sexual activity (if he had no health issues to impair his functionality- if you get my drift). Let’s assume that like most people his age, he and his gf decided to move in together to ‘save money’ and pool resources. People of all ages are doing this. If you are a Christian and you are doing this STOP! If you are a Christian dating a non-Christian, STOP!
2 Corinthians 6:14
14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?KJV
What does it mean to be unevenly yoked? It means that one person is stronger than the other and will pull the weaker person around.
Here’s this man concerned his gf isn’t a Christian but is he? If you’re already living in sin you ARE equally yoked with the person in your life because you’re both going down the wrong road. So why worry if your gf or bf is a Christian if you’re not living a Christian life why worry about their salvation/sanctification when yours is also compromised?
To be clear, this post is not about you giving up your faith and sinking further into the mire of sin. It’s about giving up your sinful life and climbing higher toward imitating Christ. How do we as Christians imitate Christ?
“Speak to the whole congregation of Israel and tell them: Be holy because I, the LORD your God, am holy.
You must be blameless before the LORD your God.
2 Samuel 22:31
As for God, His way is perfect; the word of the LORD is flawless. He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him.
And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even Gentiles do the same?
2 Corinthians 7:1
Therefore, beloved, since we have these promises, let us cleanse ourselves from everything that defiles body and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
Be imitators of God, therefore, as beloved children,
Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.
One of the things this man said to me in IG comments was, ‘It’s best to leave people alone and let them believe what they want to believe because… this is how wars are started.’ No… no it is not.
Back to my original question… why are you a Christian?
Is it a box you checked on a form because you’re an American and Americans are Christians? Don’t read this post and think that maybe it’s time to give up being a Christian. Read this post and do better. It’s not as if the time between now and when Christ returns is expanding. It’s shrinking.
The judgement seat of Christ is for BELIEVERS. It’s not for the unbelievers.
See the book Christ is holding in this icon (pictured below)?
That is the Book of Life. You know the Book of Life? the Book your name is written in but also can be scratched out of?
“He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.”
Revelation 3:5, KJV
This verse from the book of Revelation tells us your name can go in AND it can be removed… blotted out. How we live after we are baptized can have a direct effect on our status in this book, in our eternity. Salvation is a process. We do not get baptized and then go back to sinning as if nothing special happened in our lives. Every time we sin we are casting those sins upon Christ on the cross again and again.
Yes, sanctification is a struggle, a process but we are commanded to be ‘over comers’ not undertakers. Over come sin, do not take it on and wear it like a badge of honor.
If you see any words you do not understand, look them up. You’re sitting in front of a search engine right now.
Again I ask; WHY ARE YOU A CHRISTIAN?
Figure it out before it’s too late. There is no such thing as fire insurance. I am closing this post by sharing with you a vision I had years ago. Almost 20 years ago.
I was driving down Woodman Ave toward the place my then fiance, now husband were attending worship services. The people who pastured the “place” did not live far from the building. I was going to discuss wedding stuff with the woman pastor. As I was driving I had this vision:
There was some sort of platform. a kind of stage. People in bright orange jump suits like prisoners wear were being beheaded by men in black (Christians being martyred/killed by Muslims I now know it to be. At that time I had no idea what was going on but with it being so prevalent now that part of the vision now makes sense.) Some of the people being murdered were not Christians. They had not lived a Christian life. They had never been baptized, they had never confessed a sin… nothing. God told me that there will be people who never accept Christ as their savior who will allow themselves to be, ‘martyred’ thinking it will save them, that it will grant them a last minute ‘pass’ into heaven. It will not. the people who volunteer to be martyred without accepting Christ as their savior or living the Christian struggle. They will be lost.
It’s not like the parable of the workers who came to the field at different time of day but were paid the same wage. That’s not the same thing. In that parable, the workers came. They came with purpose. The people in my vision were like workers who only showed up for pay day. They never checked in with the foreman (Jesus). They never signed up on the ‘payroll’ (their names never made it into the Book of Life.)
This is not to be confused with those who sincerely confess their sins and accept Jesus even at the very end right before the knife touches them. Jesus knows the difference even though I’m having a hard time explaining it. It’s a heart matter. There is a difference between confessing sins and accepting Christ as your Savior with a sincere and contrite heart or thinking you can use the name of Jesus as a password to get into the ‘clubhouse’ (heaven).
Movie recommendation; Six: the Mark Unleashed.
This scene is from that movie. I seriously almost soiled myself when I saw this scene. Exchange the jumpers from gray to bright orange, the guillotines into machetes and there’s the vision I had.
Why are you a Christian?
What ended up happening with that man on IG? I’m sad to say he projected what appeared to be decades of hurt and anger onto me, falsely accused me, then blocked me. So… you know… the usual.
