Do you know your saint name?

This may seem like a, ‘well duh of course I do, Melissa!’ kind of question but I am quickly learning that some people forget their saint name.

I know, right?

How do they pray? Do they have an icon of their saint in their home? If not, why not?

It may seem like not a big deal in the grand scheme of things going on in the world, but in the grand scheme of things going on in the world maybe it IS a great big deal.

Prayer to your patron saint.

Pray unto God for me, O Holy Saint (Name), well-pleasing to God: for I turn unto you, who are the speedy helper and intercessor for my soul.

I don’t know about you, but I can use all the helpful intercession I can get. Seriously.

I did not grow up in the Orthodox Church. Usually you stick with your name when choosing a saint name. Many people today have names from the bible, and saint names, and do not know it. There is one saint who shares my name but I did not like what I read about her. I began an intensive search for saint name prior to my baptism into the Orthodox Church. Converts usually have names different from their saints (according to research I have done) while those born into the Orthodox Church are given their saint name AS their name at birth. I did not know this until recently. Why I began exploring saint names my conversations with some of the people at my church went like this: ‘Hi, my name is Melissa. What’s your name?’ ‘George.’ ‘What’s your saint name?’ ‘George.’.

I thought your saint name had to be different from your birth name. I was over complicating things. I think, however, that even if I had a saint name I wanted to keep that I would have changed it anyway. I wanted to be a new creation through and through. I wanted to erase Protestantism completely. this meant picking a new name.

No matter your saint name, I home you will, if necessary, re-read about the life of your saint. Remind yourself of how they lived, seek to emulate how they lived and pray for them to intercede for you with their prayers. Then come back and tell me if you noticed any changes after you began to pray for your patron saint for help.

P.s. If you do not have an icon of your patron saint, please find one, purchase it and put it in your prayer corner.
